This blog is a site to discuss issues about video as an art practice. Here you can post comments, links to essays, embed videos and images of artwork that uses video as a component. The posts and comments are to be related to the content of this course.
This post is really interesting, not just because it is a science-fiction work (which I have a special fondness). But because it is steeped in historical context. In 1984 the Cold War was in its last days but the fear of nuclear war was still very real. For a Soviet film group to choose an American author's short story to adapt to screen speaks of the shared fear on both sides.
ReplyDeleteThe animation technique is worth mentioning as well. The moving parts of the animation were accomplished by manipulating cutouts over the background. It is an older and cost-cutting method. Today you can still see the technique used in shows like South Park, although it is done on a computer.
The story itself was already over 30 years old when this was produced. This says something about it's continued relevancy. Today the Cold War is something we read about in books and only a few of you are old enough to have firsthand memories of a time when the USSR existed. How might this story be adapted for today?
